Materials and Size

Quilt with vintage photo and text about immigrant heritage.

Fabric

Preferred fabric:  The preferred fabric is 100% cotton or cotton-polyester blend and non-stretchable and non-woven (not a tee shirt or jersey fabric) for the quilt’s background.  If the fabric is stretchable, it should be reinforced with an iron-on interface backing.  When crafting a square, remember that the quilt will be folded and unfolded many times so the durability of materials is crucial to your square’s longevity.

Fabric preparation:  Please wash and machine dry fabric before cutting, as this prevents additional shrinkage.

Dimensions

Cut your fabric to 13”x13” which allows for a 1/2” seam allowance.  Keep your design within the 12”x12” message area.  (If any part of your design creeps into the 1/2” seam allowance, it may be covered by the seams in the final sewing together of the squares.). When sewn together with other squares using the 1/2” seam allowance, the actual finished quilted square reflecting your image/message will then be 12”x12”.

Panels with Multiple Squares

If you intend your squares to form one design, you may submit them individually.  Indicate the order of the squares and we will join them together.    If you submit the squares sewn together, submit them as a single strip, either vertically or horizontally, up to 4 squares.
